Make the best use of time
"For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night" (1Th 5:2).
"...sudden destruction will come upon them" (1Th 5:3).
Therefore, "...make the best use of time" (Eph 5:16), (Col 4:5)
Proverbs 24:33-34 says "A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man"
We need to make the best use of the time we have, the time given on this earth to us, by God. We think like it's never-ending and keep moving at our own speed. Hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year passes by, and there is no change in our lives. Maybe even decades have passed by and there is nothing that we have done for ourselves, for God, for the community!! No change inside of us as a person!! We are here for a reason, we need to constantly pray and ask God to show us the reason, be ready to do what God asks us to do, be able to bring a change in and around us, ask God to use us and our time in the most judicious way. We need to:-
1. Work on your lives: Think about it- "What do you want to do before the time comes, before Jesus arrives and takes you with Him or before you die?", "What do you want to achieve by then". People often say when you are on your deathbed, a lot of things will come to your mind, I would have done this, I would have done that. Think about it NOW. NOW is the time. Do it NOW, so you don't regret it THEN. At least start doing something, start moving towards your goal, so you can achieve it by THEN.
Maybe you want to exercise, start doing it NOW, so you don't regret your bad health THEN. Maybe you have some dreams and you want to fulfill them but you have been procrastinating so far. Start working towards it now. Start progressing towards it every minute, every hour, every single day and you will soon be there. Each moment that passes by is important.
2. Work for the community- I was recently reading a book called "What After Money and Fame" by Ms. Sonia Golani. Here, the author has conversations with India's rich and famous people and tries to understand what they feel like now after all the money and fame they have got. One of the chapters is about her conversation with Mr. Javed Akhtar and I don't remember the exact lines but he says something like this - society has given us a lot, all amenities, all things that we are enjoying today is because somebody has put their time and energy into it and he says I want to leave behind something that others after me can make use of or enjoy after I have left. This is such a nice thought. Think about it. Look at your surroundings, everything around you exists because someone has worked upon it. Maybe the couch that you are relaxing on, somebody would have thought about this need of yours, to have something to relax on, and they spent their time and effort to create it. Your television, your phone, everything. It's time to give back, do something, create something that others can enjoy or make use of after you have gone. Now, this does not mean that all of us have to become inventors but small acts of charity, and small acts of kindness do a great deal. Your small act of appreciation for someone may make their day. So, do that. Encourage and build others as written in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 "Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing".
3. Work on yourself (your inner self)- Your spiritual and mental well-being is important. Building upon the fruits of the holy spirit is important. 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 says, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you". So, when the day comes you may not regret doing these things. You may not think I did not even read the bible once, I did not pray, I did not meditate on the verses. Share what you know, and what you learn with others. Give back to the church. Have a fulfilling life and work on it every day.
Spending time browsing TV or browsing forwarded videos, or unnecessary Instagram reels on your phone is a real waste of time. First, someone has wasted time in creating this content and now you are wasting your very precious time in watching them.
Give that time to your family members who want to talk to you, who are waiting for you to hear them. Do something for your family.
Think about everything that may come to your mind on THE DAY. Do it NOW, so you dont regret it THEN.
God warns us against sitting ideal. Read 2 Thessalonians 3:6-10 "Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat."
We also spend a lot of time thinking about the past. I was reading a beautiful book called "I am my brand" written by Ms. Kubi Springer, she said "Past is Your Servant", which means it was here to do a job, it has done the job and gone, forget it. In Phil 3:13, Paul says "But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead". Also, read Isaiah 43:18-19 "Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert."
So, make the best use of your precious time. God has given you this life for a reason, God has given you this time for a reason. Every day has been given to you for a reason.
Ask in prayer-
- God, what can I do for you today
- What can I do for people around me today
- How can I improve myself today
